If you befriended Ryan when he was in lower secondary, you would see an extremely good boy who goes straight home after school daily. You would see this boy who diligently brings his all his books home and does all his homework. But this boy ranked bottom in class.
If you saw his evolution when he entered secondary 3, you would be shocked by how much he'd changed. The sagging haversack equipped with almost nothing inside it. Occasionally you would see one textbook on his arm, signifying a coming test. This was the boy who proclaims town as his second home. Surprisingly, this boy now scored as top 5 in the class ranking.
Then college revealed an even more rebellious being who skips tutorials/lecture but still tops his game. He felt lucky he even scrapped the minimum attendance to graduate. He got hitched for 9 months to someone great but at that point in time, pressures from his studies and friends did not allow him to make the most of it. He regretted when it ended but he took away an experience.
Now, even thou he is still trying to determine his place in the society, he is sure smiling or acting blur in a new environment is not exactly the best way to survive or to strike a good first impression. He believes that people will bully if you were to pretend you are dumb just to make others feel good. And he's also sure that being too friendly would allow people to have false impressions/expectations of you as a person. While he is unsure of how he would react to new environments, he has decided.
Now he feels, as long as he's not rude, its fair enough.
