Album: Star
Artiste: A-Mei 张惠妹
Rating: 3.5/5

First and foremost, EMI Music is real good at selecting first hits for artistes under her belt. Jolin's 舞娘, Stefanie Sun's 逆光 and now A-Mei's 如果你也听说. However, some parts of the album tracks pale in comparison to its first hit, which is a pity. But of course, i have my favourites.
Upon playing the cd, the first track that greets you is a fast tempo macarena sound alike titled 永远的快乐 which sounded unappealing to many people who had listened to it. However, i felt it was a decent effort and i love her voice!!!
As usual, the selling point of mandarin pop albums would be its ballads, and this album definitely has some hardcore extremities that would make you cry your eyeballs out... after you listen for 10000 times. The first hit 如果你也听说 is one that grew on me from the first time i heard and i'm still putting it on constant repeat even NOW. Other ballads that i feel are good are 你是爱我的 which is really tear jerking, 快乐眼泪 which i felt has superb lyrics.
My FAVOURITE TRACK is 知己, which is a sad reality of life that being friends with the one you love aint that easy after all but at least, it's worth it. It's lyrics
还好变成了知己 起码随时看到你 哭泣或欢天喜地 可以陪你
是没有差到哪里 相处还算和气 就差那么一句 我爱你...
are beautiful and meaningful.
Somehow i feel mandarin albums should stick to the conventional ideas cos experimenting would lead to disastrous results. 4 tracks in A-Mei's Star are supposed to link up to a "Music Story" but to me, all 4 tracks sounded unappealing. at all. Pity pity. What's more, there's this original english track titled "Don't Sail Away" that made me ROFL after listening. Well, i guess getting the correct lyricist is important cos they wouldn't pen something like "... that seemed to me quite strange..." or "Inside, i played chess with destiny, i saw a way to win so easily". It just sounds funny to me. LOL.
In conclusion, this album holds more promise than the previous but at some point, it should not try to be too creative. Just, stay focus on the music, not trying to squeeze a story out of 4 songs.
